Mayor Brian Bigger’s “relief” is laughable, unless one doesn’t pay their taxes on time. Most people do.
If he and council truly want to give some meaningful relief, implement Anne Suutari’s suggestions in “Column: A dozen ways Sudbury councillors could help city taxpayers”, published in this paper on April 28, 2021.
Tom Price’s article published on April 29, 2021, “The City of Greater Sudbury’s ‘big lie’”, is downright frightening. S&P Global gives the city an AA rating because “it has proven its ability to cover increasing expenditures with increasing taxes,” so Bigger takes that as license to continue increasing taxes.
S&P should mind their own business, or pay our tax bills. The mayor and most councillors should start planning for a career change after the next municipal election.
I think there must have been something in the drinking water, or perhaps it was our good common sense, no-nonsense education that produced so many excellent critical thinkers. To wit, Tom Davies (former Walden mayor and former Sudbury regional chairman), former councillor Tony Vagnini, and his son, current Ward 2 Coun. Michael Vagnini, and columnist Anne Suutari.
