Weighing in on the landfill

Unless you have more waste than can be carried away in your recycling and garbage bins, you may never know that the Fournier Landfill Site now has a weigh scale.

Residents have always had to pay a tipping fee each time they use the landfill site. Generally this was a flat rate. Effective May 1, residents will pay by weight.

According to Infrastructure Services “When you enter the landfill, you will need to stop at the weigh scale. Users must be prepared to pay tipping fees based on the type of load being brought into the landfill. Sorting your waste prior to going to the landfill could save you money! Any recyclable items that are accepted at the landfill may be removed in the appropriate location as directed by signage prior to entering onto the scale. Ask the landfill attendant to help with any questions you may have when you show up to the landfill.”

Hyder Rajab, the Director of Infrastructure Services said that “It will cost less for the average normal house holds items according to our records (rather than paying $7 a flat rate now they will pay $5), only heavy weight items will cost more and people will save money if they recycled their recyclable materials since it will be not scaled.”

During the Provincial Stay-At-Home order, the landfill remains open. For the safety of all members of the public and Town staff, the public is asked to respect the protocols in place for COVID-19: all users wear a mask when paying tipping fees, interacting with Town staff, or other members of the public.

The landfill site is now on summer hours until September 30th: Tuesdays-Thursdays and Saturdays 9am-6pm.
